Turkey’s defence minister has accused Greece of “hypocrisy” and of seeking confrontation in the Aegean, after two Greek coastguard ships fired up to 30 shots at a Turkish cargo ship sailing in international waters off the coast of the Turkish province of Çanakkale. “Just after this incident, the Greek prime minister accused Turkey of aggression…if that’s not hypocrisy, then what is?” he wondered. Fortunately none of the 18 crew members of the “Anatolian” was injured, but the Greek coastguards fired on the ship from both sides and followed it for half an hour. Greece admits to opening fire on the Turkish freighter, claiming the ship was “suspicious” and that all happened in its territorial waters.
