A fire broke out this morning in a shop in the historic Kayıhan bazaar, located in the city of Bursa, in north-western Turkey. The fire, which started in a shop selling second-hand furniture, reached the roof of the building and spread to four neighbouring premises, causing a huge column of black smoke that was visible from numerous points across the city, forcing several crews of firefighters to intervene.
According to information provided by the Turkish press and the DHA news agency, the fire started at around 09:30 on the upper floor of a two-storey wooden building selling second-hand furniture, situated on Danış Street in the Kayıhan neighbourhood, within the central district of Osmangazi.
According to initial reports, the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit on the top floor of the building, from where the flames spread rapidly to the roof of the building and then to four other nearby premises, causing moments of panic in the area. The owners of the affected businesses tried to salvage their belongings whilst some structures collapsed due to the damage, and thick smoke could be seen from various parts of the city.
The black smoke from the fire blanketed the sky over the city of Bursa. After receiving the alert, numerous crews from the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Fire Brigade rushed to the scene, whilst police officers cordoned off the perimeter, preventing civilians from entering the affected area. Seven fire crews took part in the fire-fighting efforts, comprising 17 vehicles and around 100 firefighters.
The fire was eventually brought under control following an operation that lasted an hour, although cooling-down operations in the premises where partial collapses had occurred continued throughout the morning. The fire caused damage to a total of six shops in the historic Kayıhan bazaar. The deputy mayor of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, Şahin Biba, who supervised operations on the ground, announced the launch of an investigation to determine the causes of the fire.
