A court in Turkey has sentenced famous Turkish singer Gülşen to 10 months in prison for controversial statements she made during a concert last year, in which she referred to religious school students as “perverts”. Gülşen was arrested in August last year after a video, recorded in April, in which she made a joking comment saying that a member of her band was a “pervert” because he had attended to a religious school.
In her statement, the singer claimed that it was a joke among friends, and that her comment was not made to the public or to media. After spending a few days in prison, the singer was released but under house arrest, which was later lifted, but having to pay a large bond to leave the country. Having now been sentenced to less than 2 years, her sentence will be suspended and the singer – who has apologized for the incident – will not have to go to prison if she does not commit another crime for the next 5 years.
