Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan phoned the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, in the midst of the attempted rebellion or coup declared by the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who finally announced the return of his troops to their bases and the start of negotiations to “avoid Russian bloodshed” when he was only 200 kilometers from Moscow.
In the phone call to Putin, Erdoğan stressed the importance of acting with “common sense” and showed Turkey‘s readiness to negotiate “a peaceful resolution of the events in Russia as soon as possible.” For its part, the Kremlin reported that in the call “the President of the Turkish Republic expressed his full support for the steps adopted by the Russian leader.” According to the latest information, the agreement with Prigozhin could include immunity for Wagner members, as well as the departure of Shoigu from the Ministry of Defense and Gerasimov from the Russian General Staff.
