Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation yesterday in which they discussed bilateral relations between Turkey and Russia as well as a number of current regional and global issues, including the situation in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine.
According to Turkish media reports from official sources in the Communications Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, the two leaders reportedly discussed key issues related to bilateral relations and the regional and global situation during their telephone conversation, while Kremlin sources indicated that the two presidents discussed trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, as well as a number of international current affairs issues.
The Turkish president’s communications office also said that Erdoğan had told Putin of Turkey’s desire to expand cooperation with Russia in a number of areas, starting with increasing the volume of trade. The Turkish leader also reportedly stressed once again his government’s intense diplomatic efforts to put an end to regional tensions and its desire to continue contributing to peace, including in conflicts such as the one between Russia and Ukraine.
Erdoğan and Putin met in person last October in the Russian city of Kazan during the BRICS summit, to which the Turkish president was personally invited by the Russian leader, as Moscow has from the start supported Ankara’s aspirations to join the bloc, which the Turkish government considers a strategic bid for its interests although it insists that this does not imply that it is distancing itself from the West or that it will break its close ties with NATO. Turkey, and Erdoğan himself, could also play a key role in a likely future negotiation to end the war in Ukraine, given that the Eurasian country has very good relations with both sides in the conflict.
