The low level of water reserves in Istanbul due to the severe drought in Turkey is becoming worrying, with the levels in the dams that supply water to the city – the most populous in Turkey with 16 million inhabitants – in lows not seen in decades. The Büyükçekmece dam, located to the west of the city and which a year ago at this time was at more than 94% of its capacity, is today with only 30.94% of water. In general terms, Istanbul water reserves are on average at 35.42%, compared to 83.48% a year ago, which has led authorities to consider restrictions and even bringing water from rivers in other provinces.
