A Turkish city council placed a bust of the historical figure Ertuğrul Gazi whose face actually resembled that of Turkish actor Engin Altan Düzyatan, who brings him to life in the Turkish series Resurrection Ertuğrul.
A bust of the historical figure Ertuğrul Gazi has sowed controversy in Turkey due to the enormous resemblance it has with the famous Turkish actor Engin Altan Düzyatan, who precisely embodies this historical figure in the well-known Turkish series Resurrection Ertuğrul (Diriliş Ertuğrul).
The object of the controversy was erected in the city of Ordu, on the Turkish Black Sea coast, as part of a collection of 20 busts built in bronze and basalt stone by the artist Ömer Gençtürk and located opposite the town hall square, all they representing historical figures of Turkic descent.
What at first seemed like a purely local news and without any significance, has ended up being a matter that has jumped to the entire national press after Ordu residents themselves and numerous users on social media complained that the bust did not keep similarity to the historical character of Ertuğrul Gazi, but rather with the face of the actor who plays him in the well-known television series broadcast on the TRT-1 network.
“We were uncomfortable that the bust of Ertuğrul Gazi resembled Engin Altan Düzyatan, the leading actor in the series Resurrection Ertuğrul, and the same day the bust in question was removed. The required investigation into who is responsible of this negligence has been launched. We thank public opinion for the sensitivity they have shown,” the local council reported in a statement.
Two officials fired after the controversy
Finally, Turkish media reported on Monday that after the enormous controversy unleashed, the controversial bust had been removed from the town hall square of Ordu, and an investigation had been opened against those responsible, as a result of which two municipal officials have been dismissed, including the person responsible of the culture department.
The life of Ertuğrul Gazi, father of the founder of the Ottoman Empire (Osman I), is the main theme around which the Turkish series Diriliş Ertuğrul speaks about; since its premiere it has garnered enormous success not only in Turkey but also in many other countries, including Latin America.
