A ca theft by a suspect who immediately fled triggered a spectacular police chase through the streets of the city of Bursa, in northwestern Turkey, in an incident captured by a police car’s dashcam that looked like something out of an action movie scene.
According to reports from several local Turkish media outlets, the incident took place yesterday around 6:00 p.m. in the Yunuseli neighborhood of the Osmangazi district, right in the heart of the city of Bursa. A deliveryman left the engine running in a van while delivering a package, a moment that an unidentified individual took advantage of to climb into the delivery vehicle and quickly drive away from the scene. Upon returning to the van, the delivery driver realized the vehicle had been stolen and immediately notified the police for assistance.
Following the report, teams from the Bursa Police Department launched a large-scale police search operation with technical surveillance support to locate the stolen vehicle, quickly determining the escape route used by the thief; from there, the vehicle was detected shortly thereafter by cameras from the license plate recognition system located at the entrance to the city’s inner ring road, in the central district of Yıldırım, and after receiving the alert, officers reinforced the search operation and set up roadblocks on possible escape routes.
The suspect was located shortly thereafter behind the wheel of the stolen van as he crossed an intersection with traffic lights in the Millet neighborhood, also in the central district of Yıldırım. Despite warnings from the officers to stop, the driver accelerated and continued his escape, triggering an intense high-speed chase through the area for about 20 kilometers. During the espectacular chase, the thief repeatedly endangered the road safety of other drivers and pedestrians by veering into narrow streets in an attempt to evade the police patrols chasing him.
In the final stretch of the police chase, the fugitive took advantage of another vehicle that unintentionally crossed the path of the officers’ car to make a sudden maneuver and steer the van onto another side street in Bursa, where he abandoned the van and managed to escape on foot without a trace, despite the fact that several police units deployed in the area launched an operation to try to locate the escaped suspect. Officers from the vehicle theft squad are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend the thief.
