Turkish authorities announced Friday that rescue teams have determined the location of the nine miners missing this week after a massive landslide in an open-pitgold mine in the eastern province of Erzincan. Efforts are now focusing on how to remove the thousands of tonnes of soil, equivalent to 400,000 truckloads, to reach the miners.
So far, eight mine officials – including a senior executive of the US company that operates the mine – have been arrested as a result of the investigation into the accident, which occurred on 13 February. The nine missing miners had come to inspect the area after an evacuation of all personnel was ordered following the discovery of several cracks in the ground. Turkish authorities also claim that contamination by cyanide – used in gold mining – has been ruled out following an examination of the soil and water in the area.
