Rescue efforts continue after severe floods hit several provinces in central Turkey, leaving at least one dead and another person missing in at least four provinces across the country, including Kırşehir, Kayseri, Nevşehir and Ankara.
Torrential rains in Kırşehir province killed a 52-year-old shepherd, whose body was later found 4 km from where he had disappeared after being washed away, Turkish media reported. Also in Kayseri province, one person remains missing and is still being searched for by rescue teams after several homes were submerged by floodwaters.
Meanwhile in Nevşehir, in the heart of the tourist region of Cappadocia, three vehicles were damaged when rock fragments from fairy chimneys fell on several parked vehicles during flooding that followed torrential rains in the region. A man and his 12-year-old grandson were trapped in their car, but were successfully rescued by special units from the Gendarmerie. Due to falling rocks, several roads in the region were also temporarily closed to traffic.
The floods also affected the capital province of Ankara, where the Turkish General Directorate of Meteorology had issued an alert for heavy rains that ended up leaving streets under water in districts such as Çankaya, causing significant material damage to commercial premises and shops, as well as problems for traffic in some areas of the Turkish capital, although fortunately without leaving any victims.
