love story: man waits his beloved woman

A love story: waiting 24 years at a stop for the return of his beloved

Ecevit Öküzcü‘s is one of those love stories that inspires deep respect, admiration, and compassion. Ecevit, affectionately nicknamed by those who know him as Aşık Ecevit (Ecevit the Lover), is a Turkish man who lives in the province of Sinop, in northern Turkey, and who for 24 years has been waiting every day at a bus stop the return of his beloved, in the same place where he met her for the first time. According to his own account, for a month everything went well but, after that time, the young woman distanced herself and she went to Istanbul, and never returned.

Tragically, Ecevit, who is now 48 years old, has suffered from a degenerative disease since he was a child that has gradually caused him to become blind, without doctors being able to do anything. “The girl left, and I haven’t seen her since. She didn’t say anything to me, she got into a taxi and left. What else can I do?” says Ecevit. “I don’t want to love anyone again. I don’t have a father, I only have a brother. I am always here, the people who pass by here help me,” he adds. As his love story became known, a person who admired his dedication and felt compassion decided to build him a shed to protect him from the rain and the sun, on which a sign reads: “Place of Ecevit the lover”. Meanwhile, Ecevit waits patiently, day by day, without losing hope and for 24 years, at the same stop where they met for the first time… the return of his beloved.
