A new bus accident left 22 passengers injured in Turkey after the driver lost control of the vehicle, less than a week after nine people were killed and 26 others injured in another incident when a bus crashed into a bridge outside the Turkish capital Ankara.
Turkish media reported that the accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. local time (04:30 CET) on the motorway connecting Malatya and Kayseri at Doğanlar, a small town in the Akçadağ district of southeastern Turkey. The bus was reportedly on an overnight route between Bodrum – a popular tourist destination on the Aegean coast – and Van – in Eastern Anatolia – when the driver, identified by the initials Ş.C., suddenly lost control of the vehicle and swerved.
As a result, the bus left the road and overturned, rolling down a slope for about 50 metres. After alerting the emergency services, numerous fire brigade, gendarmerie and medical personnel arrived at the scene of the accident. There were 36 passengers on the bus, 21 of whom were injured, as well as an attendant, who were all taken by ambulance to several hospitals in Malatya.
According to Turkish media, two of the injured passengers, V.K., 61, and M.Ö., 25, are in serious condition as a result of the accident, while the others are progressing favourably. While the authorities are investigating the causes, several survivors claim that the bus lost control because the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
