A two-story building suddenly collapsed late yesterday in the center of Malatya city, in Southeastern Turkey, reportedly after a load-bearing wall was damaged during renovation works. Despite the fact that there was a cafe and several shops in the basement of the building, and that the street was very busy, miraculously there were no fatalities, as confirmed today by Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, who reported that 21 people were rescued alive and that 8 of the 13 injured have already been discharged from hospitals, while 4 people have already been arrested in connection with the collapse. “First I heard a creak, and then the building collapsed, with a cloud of dust emerging. It was like Judgment Day,” said a witness.
