Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has announced that “progress” has been made in negotiations with China for the construction of Turkey’s third nuclear power plant, to be built in the Turkish Thrace region near the border with Greece and Bulgaria. “We have reached a very important point in the negotiations with China, and we have to finalise them in the coming months,” Bayraktar told a group of journalists.
Bayraktar also reported that negotiations are also underway with Russia to build Turkey’s 2nd nuclear power plant, to be carried out in the province of Sinop on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, while the procurement of small modular nuclear reactors is also under consideration. “We are also in contact with South Korea. Turkey’s priority in this regard is technology transfer,” said the minister.
The Russian atomic corporation Rosatom has built Turkey’s first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu (Mersin), in southern Turkey, with a total installed capacity of 4,800 megawatts, which once fully operational will generate 10% of the country’s electricity needs.
