One person died when part of the historic walls of Istanbul, the former Constantinople, collapsed in the central Fatih district. The deceased, identified as 62-year-old Mustafa Gündoğar, died after several large stones from the wall fell on him, since he had built his house and an orchard next to the walls. The cause of the collapse is still being investigated. The walls, 22 km long, were originally built by order of the Roman Emperor Constantine I the Great during the founding of Constantinople, although the current ones were built in the 5th century by the Eastern Emperor Theodosius II before the threat of the invasions of the Huns.
