A snow avalanche in Turkey, which occurred on a 3,467-meter-high peak amid heavy snowfall in the province of Hakkari, in southeastern Anatolia, was captured by several witnesses on their cell phones, who recorded spectacular images of a scene worthy of a Hollywood movie.
The phenomenon occurred on Mount Sümbül, where the avalanche created an impressive scene, according to reports by Turkish media. The snow avalanches in the area affected a section near the highway connecting the cities of Hakkari and Çukurca, and were recorded from various angles both by drivers traveling on the road and by citizens from the city center of Hakkari.
Despite the decrease in snowfall in this region of Türkiye with the arrival of spring, snow avalanches continue to occur; in this case, the avalanche even reached the Zap River and spilled onto the road, posing a significant risk to drivers.
While in the western provinces of the country temperatures at this time of year are already hovering around 20 degrees or higher, in the provinces of the far east of Anatolia nighttime temperatures are still dropping to -9 °C these days, and snowfall continues to be recorded, especially in higher-altitude areas.
In fact, just one day earlier, heavy snowfall and blizzards in the eastern province of Muş caused serious disruptions to road transport, and ten vehicles and some fifty people were trapped by the snow on a road connecting Hasköy (Muş) with Mutki (Bitlis); after intense efforts, the snowplow crews managed to clear the road and rescue the vehicles.
