Selahattin Demirtaş, former chairman of the Kurdish nationalist party HDP, has been sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison for statements made in December 2015 to the press in which he insulted Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan and the then Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, accusing them of plundering the country and trying to hide their mistakes; a words that, according to the prosecution’s accusation, exceeded freedom of expression and criticism. Demirtaş, who has been a candidate for the Turkish Presidency, has been serving another 4-year and 8-month prison sentence since September 2018 for links to the PKK terrorist group. The HDP party is currently facing a possible closure by the Constitutional Court for anti-democratic practices and for the alleged collaboration of its members with the PKK.
