Heavy snowfall in eastern Turkey has caused severe road traffic problems in the eastern province of Muş, where around 20 vehicles were trapped by ice and snow on the so-called Kazan ramp in the Korkut district. The sharp drop in temperatures following the snowfall created icy patches that forced the intervention of Provincial Administration teams and Turkish gendarmerie forces.
Thanks to the joint action of the emergency services, the 20 vehicles immobilised by the snow could finally be removed from the road. After snow clearance and salt spreading, the road was reopened to traffic under controlled conditions, according to the provincial authorities and several Turkish media.
Also in Muş province, seven other people who had been trapped in two vehicles on the rural road between Derecik and Üçevler in recent hours were rescued safely, according to local media reports. The road, which gives access to some 30 villages and hamlets in the mountains near the provincial capital, was closed due to a heavy snowstorm.
After receiving the warning, teams from the Provincial Administration travelled to the area and managed to clear the stretch of road despite the harsh weather conditions. The operation, which was carried out in a heavy blizzard, lasted approximately three hours before the teams finally reached the stranded vehicles and moved the occupants to safety. According to the authorities, the seven people rescued are in good health and were subsequently able to return to Muş city in their own vehicles.
Meanwhile, in northern Turkey, the province of Kastamonu has officially launched the snow removal campaign for the winter 2025-2026, after recent snowfall forced the temporary closure of several rural roads, leading to the activation of provincial teams to restore traffic. The Kastamonu authorities have reported that work will continue throughout the winter season on a network covering 9,844 kilometres of rural roads, ensuring access to a total of 1,035 villages in the province.
