Turkey has denied reports in various media and social networks claiming that the Turkish government has signed a deal with Berlin on a new migration pact that would allow the German government to deport and send thousands of refugees, as well as Turkish citizens without legal residence permits in Germany, back to Turkey.
‘Reports that Turkey and Germany have sealed a new agreement on refugees and that 200 refugees have already been deported to Turkey, are unfounded,’ the Turkish Presidency Communications Agency’s Anti-Disinformation Centre said in a statement quoted by Turkish media, indicating that the foreign ministry had also denied any plans by Germany for a mass deportation to Turkey of 13,500 Turkish citizens without legal residence permits, as had been claimed by some media on the Internet.
‘It is absolutely impossible for an agreement to be made between Turkey and Germany for the mass deportation of Turkish citizens who do not have a residence permit,’ the agency stressed, attributing such news to “a manipulation campaign by certain platforms”.
‘Those Turkish citizens who do not have a legal residence permit (to live in Germany), can be accepted on an individual basis and with the approval of Turkish foreign ministry officials and once they have exercised all their rights within the German legal framework (mainly objection processes),’ the statement said, adding that ’it is absolutely forbidden for citizens of third countries (Syria, Afghanistan or others) to be accepted in Turkey without a legal residence permit, neither on a mass basis nor on an individual basis.’
Referring to images posted on some social networks accompanying these reports, which claimed that some 200 refugees had already been deported by Germany to Turkey, the Anti-Disinformation Centre claims that they were manipulated and originated from accounts linked to FETÖ, the pseudo-religious organisation that organised the failed 2016 coup in Turkey. ‘The images were taken at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, and the airline that the passengers (in the images) are using has not operated flights from Germany to Turkey for several weeks,’ said the statement, which asked the public not to pay attention to unverified information.
