At least 10 people were killed and 59 others injured after a fatal trafic accident early this morning on the North Marmara Highway near Sakarya province, about 100 kilometres east of Istanbul, involving up to seven vehicles in a chain collision, including a lorry and three buses.
The tragedy occurred at around 4:30 a.m. (Turkish time), with initial reports indicating that the first collision occurred when a passenger car collided with a lorry, probably due to poor visibility due to fog, near the town of Dağdibi on the Istanbul-bound section of the motorway. Sakarya governor Yaşar Karadeniz told reporters that some of the victims were killed when they got out of their vehicles after the initial collision, and were hit then by other incoming vehicles.
Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said that of the 59 injured – all of whom were taken to hospitals in the region – eight are in critical condition, and that the death toll could rise. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced the immediate opening of an investigation by the Sakarya public prosecutor’s office, to which three prosecutors have been assigned; Tunç said that six of the drivers involved in the traffic accident have been detained for questioning about the accident, and that another will be detained once he finishes his medical treatment.
