As police inspections to identify undocumented migrants in the city continue, the Interior Ministry has given Syrian refugees an ultimatum, giving them until September 24 to leave Istanbul if they are registered in other provinces of Turkey. Official figures indicate that the Turkish metropolis hosts 1.2 million registered foreigners, most of them Syrians under temporary protection status, but also people from other countries with legal permission to live or work; however, the actual number of Syrians in Istanbul is much higher because many who are registered in other provinces move to this city in search of work.
To avoid this and prevent an overpopulation problem, especially in the poorer neighborhoods, the Turkish authorities have given Syrians an ultimatum to leave Istanbul and return to the province where their residence was registered after entering Turkey, with the exception of those who have been affected by the earthquakes of last February. In case of non-compliance with the measure, these Syrian citizens could see their temporary protection status in Turkey revoked, being considered from then on as undocumented immigrants and could, therefore, be expelled from the country and deported to Syria.
