The well-known Turkish actress Ece İrtem was laid to rest today following an emotional funeral held in Kuşadası, on Turkey’s Aegean coast, where she was bid a farewell at a ceremony marked by grief and the tears of her closest loved ones. Family members, friends, representatives from the world of entertainment and numerous public attended the final farewell to the actress, who died on 15 June aged 35 after suffering a heart attack at her home in Istanbul.
The funeral for the young actress, known for her roles in Turkish TV series such as Kızılcık Şerbeti, Yeni Gelin, Kertenkele, Payitaht Abdülhamid, Zümrüdüanka, Kuruluş Osman, Yasak Elma and Mahkum, was held in the Turkish province of Aydın; the religious ceremony took place at the Hanım Mosque in the coastal town of Kuşadası, according to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet.
During the funeral service, family and friends prayed beside the coffin amidst great emotion and unable to hold back their tears, whilst the actress’s mother, Nuriye İrtem, and her father, Vural İrtem, received condolences from those in attendance. Many family members and friends were visibly distraught and even found it difficult to remain standing during the ceremony. Following the funeral, the body of the Turkish actress was buried at the local cemetery in Yeniköy.
“She was a person full of love, life and happiness”
The Turkish actor Gökhan Uygun, one of those attending the funeral, explained that he had exchanged messages with İrtem on professional matters just three days before her death and that the two had met in person a week before her sudden death. According to him, the young woman was in good spirits.
For his part, Çağlar Kuru, İrtem’s university friend, said that she was a person full of life and had no known health problems. “I can’t find the words. We saw each other about a month ago and spent a lot of time together. She was a person full of love, energy and happiness. It’s truly heartbreaking to go through this grief. May God grant patience to her mother, father and brother. It’s a very sad loss. She was a very hard-working and determined person. She was in excellent health and very happy,” he said.
Kuru also dismissed some of the speculation that had arisen following the young Turkish actress’s death: “I don’t believe that some of the accusations levelled against Ece İrtem are true. She was a very organised person and loved getting involved in new projects. She had got to where she was through her own hard work. We’d talked about her future projects and goals. She was full of life, happy and full of enthusiasm for life,” he concluded.
