The proliferation of giant holes in the Konya plateau, considered the granary of Turkey, increasingly worries experts and the population: this year alone the number of holes has increased from 600 to more than 2,000, and they appear closer and closer of inhabited areas. It is a natural geological phenomenon caused by the decrease in groundwater due to drought, climate change and the overexploitation of aquifers for agriculture, which causes the collapse of the soil in the upper layers; the problem is that these holes appear suddenly, and some of them reach dozens of meters deep.
