The dust cloud from the Sahara desert, which has dyed the skies over Greece orange in recent days, has reached Turkey, where meteorologists and experts have warned in recent days of deteriorating air quality and visibility, with consequences for people with respiratory problems, children and the elderly, as well as for transport.
The most affected regions in Turkey are the Aegean coast, the Marmara region (including Istanbul), the Mediterranean coast, the western Black Sea and the western region of Central Anatolia. Meteorologists expect the Sahara desert dust cloud to linger in Turkey for 3 days: it has already been darkening the skies in cities such as Istanbul, although the effect is not expected to be as pronounced as that seen in Athens due to the presence of stronger winds which will disperse the suspended particles. After Istanbul, from tomorrow the African dust cloud will continue eastwards and will have its worst effects in Ankara, Kastamonu and Konya.
