The Greek Orthodox Christian community of Istanbul celebrated on January 6 the Epiphany, which marks the birth and baptism of Jesus according to their calendar. The ceremony, in which according to tradition after a mass the Patriarch of Istanbul Bartholomew I threw a cross that some men had to get back swimming into the cold waters of the Bosphorus, was marked this year by restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced the capacity to be reduced and the number of people who jumped into the water to be limited to just two.
