Turkey‘s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya has announced an investigation after a police officer opened fire at a Turkish police station, killing two colleagues, both of whom were his superiors, in an incident that has shocked the country.
The incident took place on Saturday morning at 8:15 local time (7:15 CET), when the attacker, a police officer identified by the acronym S.U.Ş., used his service weapon and discharged a magazine at several colleagues at a police station in Adıyaman, in southeastern Turkey.
The gunman was neutralised by another policeman who shot him in the leg, and subsequently pinned down. Following the shooting, numerous ambulances and emergency crews were sent to the scene; two senior police officers, both critically injured, were taken to local hospitals and eventually died.
“Our police chief superintendent and the team commanding superintendent were immediately rushed to the hospital. But despite all the emergency interventions made, unfortunately both of them died of their injuries, becoming martyrs. The policeman who carried out the attack was also neutralised with injuries, and is currently under supervision in hospital. No other casualties have been reported,” said the governor of Adıyaman.
While both the interior minister and the local governor have announced the launching of an investigation into the incident, Turkish authorities have so far been reluctant to give details about what led the police officer to shoot his own colleagues at this police station.
