A large fire broke out in Ankara at midday, causing panic in the Turkish capital, where a huge plume of black smoke was visible from several kilometres away. Turkish media reported that the fire broke out in an industrial park in the Yenimahalle district, in the west of the city, and that numerous firefighters were sent to the area.
The causes of the large fire, which apparently started in a scrapyard in the İvedikköy district on the outskirts of the Turkish capital, are not yet known. The fire quickly spread to a tyre depot due to the wind, forcing all the city’s fire brigades to be mobilised and even aerial units to be called in. There is no information so far on possible casualties or injuries, but this incident comes only a day after another fire in a nightclub in Istanbul caused 29 deaths.
