5 Turkish warships have been dispatched to Eastern Mediterranean waters to escort the exploration vessel Oruç Reis, amid tensions with Greece over drilling activities in search of hydrocarbons near Cyprus. At the end of July, Turkey suspended its activity as a gesture of goodwill to favor talks with Athens, until Greece announced days ago a unilateral agreement with Egypt on the maritime limits in the Mediterranean. Turkey claims that such an agreement violates its rights and sovereignty, and accuses Greece of not keeping its promises and fuelling tensions in the region.
