The famous map made in 1513 by the Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis is once again on public display at the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. Discovered by chance in 1924, the map is exhibited in the Library of Ahmed III and it is a surprising and mysterious object, since Piri Reis indicates that it was made from several sources and lands that would not be discovered until decades or even centuries later, like the coast of South America or Antarctica, appear on it. One of his sources, according to the Ottoman admiral, was a map drawn by Christopher Columbus himself found on a Spanish ship captured in 1501, only 9 years after the discovery of America. He also mentions Portuguese and Ptolemaic maps as sources.
