Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan inaugurated the Island of Democracy and Freedom on May 27, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the 1960 coup d’état. Located on the island of Yassıada, in the Princes’ Islands of Istanbul, here was where the military tried Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, the first democratically elected in Turkey, who would be executed by the coup leaders in 1961. The island now includes a museum, a hotel, a conference room, a mosque and restaurants.
