Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in recent hours, in which the two leaders discussed the war between Russia and Ukraine and various regional issues, including the situation in Syria.
Turkish media reported that Erdoğan and Putin also discussed the recent meeting between the Russian leader and US President Donald Trump in Alaska. According to sources from the Turkish presidential communications office, Putin also thanked Erdoğan for the series of peace talks in Istanbul and Turkey’s mediation efforts between Kiev and Moscow.
The Turkish president reportedly reiterated in that call that Ankara supports all efforts aimed at achieving a permanent peace in the region through an agreement involving “all sides” in the conflict – in reference to Ukraine – and leading to a just and lasting peace. On other issues affecting the region, Erdoğan discussed with his Russian counterpart the recent clashes in southern Syria following the withdrawal of Syrian government forces from the Suwayda region, and stressed the importance of Israel stopping violating Syria’s sovereignty and contributing to the destabilisation of the country.
In remarks on Saturday about the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska, the Turkish leader said the meeting served to give new impetus to efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and reiterated that Turkey “is ready to make any contribution that will lead to peace“. Russian Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who spoke by phone yesterday with his US counterpart Marco Rubio, also conveyed to the US Secretary of State that Türkiye is ready to support any effort leading to a lasting peace in Ukraine.
Just yesterday, after attending the meeting with Trump at the White House along with several European leaders, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Turkey should participate in a future peace summit on Ukraine following a possible trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelenskyy and Putin, which for now is only a mere idea.
