The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ, for its acronym in English) has expressed its concern about the “systematic obstacles” suffered by Turkish journalists who apply for a visa for a European country in the Schengen Zone, and that it has not hesitated to describe as “discriminatory practices”. The EFJ denounces a “biased and discriminatory treatment” against Turkish journalists by European embassies, which prevents journalists from “fulfilling their professional obligations”, and adds that the rejection of visas for Turkish journalists went from 15% of applications in 2022 to 50% in 2023. Besides, there are the high prices and long waiting times faced by Turkish professionals applying for a visa for an EU country, only to finally see their visa was rejected for no reason or alleging that they had intention to emigrate illegally.
