Doctors and experts have expressed their concern at the exponential increase in measles cases in Istanbul, where all the alarms have gone off after the Istanbul Medical Chamber issued a report on June 13 warning of the notable increase of measles cases in the province. Turkey has become the third country in Europe with the most detected cases, only surpassed by Russia and Tajikistan.
Between April 2022 and March 2023, 457 measles cases were diagnosed in Turkey, but 343 of them were detected only in the first two months of 2023. Cerrahpaşa University Hospital in Istanbul alone, has treated 17 measles cases this year, an unusually high figure that is higher even at other hospitals. Experts attribute this increase to several factors, including the arrival of unvaccinated illegal immigrants or the growth of the anti-vaccination movement: if the population’s vaccination rate falls below 95%, Turkey could face a measles epidemic, they warn.
