Seven people were killed and five injured on the road in a two-car collision in Burdur, a southern Turkey‘s province just north of Antalya, where another deadly traffic accident involving a bus this morning killed nine people and left dozens injured on the road.
As reported by the Turkish news agency Anatolia, the tragic event occurred when a car driven by 21-year-old Cuma Ali Süzerm collided head-on with another vehicle driven by 42-year-old Sedat Akgün; the accident occurred in the Aşağı Yumrutaş area in the direction of Isparta, on the Ağlasun-Antalya-Isparta highway, and left both cars wrecked.
After being alerted by the 112 emergency service, medical, fire and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene of the accident, where both drivers and several occupants of the two vehicles died on the spot, including 45-year-old Melek Akgün, Kuzey Akgün (10), İfaket Aydın (70) and Nevin Süzer (53), while one of the injured – 20-year-old Hasan Akdağ – died later after being admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
The Burdur Governor’s Office confirmed that a total of seven people lost their lives in the accident: “Five of our injured citizens have been transferred to nearby hospitals. Following the accident, the necessary safety measures were taken in the area and our search and rescue, health and traffic teams continued their work. The injured are currently being treated in hospitals”.
6,351 road deaths in one year alone
“The road has been reopened to traffic in a controlled manner. We convey our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” the governor said in an official statement. Turkish media reported that the horrific accident occurred at around 11:00 a.m., just 40 minutes after the accident that occurred this morning some 90 kilometres south in the outskirts of Antalya, where a speeding bus ran off the road, killing nine people and injuring dozens more, some of them seriously.
Turkey’s Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced that “in relation to the traffic accident in Burdur that resulted in the death of seven people, the Burdur Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation and two prosecutors have been assigned to the case”, while also sending a message of condolences for the families of those who died in the crash.
Road accidents are common in Turkey. According to the latest official data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), 266,854 deadly road accidents were recorded across the country in 2024 alone, in which 6,351 people died and 385,117 others were injured.
