11 people were injured in a horrific accident on the metro in the city of Izmir, on Turkey’s west coast, which was caught on security cameras. The incident occurred at the centrally located Üçyol metro station in the Konak district when the escalators running upwards out of the station suddenly began to move rapidly in the opposite direction.
As seen on CCTV footage, at that moment several people ascending the escalator lost their balance and began to fall rapidly downwards, where most of the injuries occurred as people fell on top of each other, while those at the top tried as best they could to grab on to avoid falling to the bottom. Turkish state broadcaster TRT reported that a total of 11 people were slightly injured in this terrifying incident.
Several police and emergency services personnel were alerted and the injured were taken to hospitals in the area, where they were released shortly afterwards. According to Turkish media reports, a similar accident occurred on 30 December at the same station when an escalator suddenly started moving in the opposite direction, leaving a total of five people injured.
