A large meteorite crossed the skies of eastern and southeastern Anatolia last night, causing alarm and fascination among many people who were able to observe and even film the unusual phenomenon, which was visible in the provinces of Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Bingöl, Erzurum and Tunceli. The meteorite was spotted at around 20:15 Turkish time (19:15 CET) and numerous videos immediately appeared on social media, showing the meteor streaking across the sky until it finally exploded before touching down, causing a huge flash.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said in a statement that the spectacular explosion of the meteorite in the sky caused windows to rattle in several areas, specifically in the districts of Kiğı and Yayladere in the eastern province of Bingöl, but with no serious damage to property or people reported.
