The famous actor Serhat Mustafa Kılıç was found dead on Saturday 5 September at his home in the Kağıthane district, on the European side of Istanbul. It was the actor’s own girlfriend who discovered the 51-year-old actor, lying motionless in an armchair in the living room. Meanwhile, the latest footage of the actor alive has come to light, captured by a security camera in the building where he lived.
Kılıç’s girlfriend, identified as Özlem E., went to his home in Kağıthane because she had not heard from him since Thursday, two days earlier. Once there, she found the actor sitting motionless in an armchair in the living room. After alerting the emergency services, medical teams and police officers attended the scene. Unfortunately, after examining the actor, the medical services could only confirm his death.
The police are treating the case as a suspicious death
Initial investigations revealed the presence of bruises around the eyes, arms and legs of Kılıç, according to the Turkish news website NTV. The actor, who recently appeared in the Turkish series Teşkilat, had no known health problems apart from a thyroid condition.
However, his girlfriend is reported to have told the authorities that he was undergoing treatment for leukaemia. It has also been reported that the police found drugs at the actor’s home. After inspecting the property, officers classified the death as a suspicious death.
Meanwhile, the latest known footage of Kılıç alive has come to light. Footage from the building’s CCTV cameras shows the actor arriving home, leaning against a wall whilst waiting for the lift, and then heading towards the stairs when the lift failed to arrive.
A career spanning almost 30 years in theatre and film
Serhat Kılıç’s artistic career spanned almost 30 years, from the stages of the theatre to the big screen. Born in Ankara on 8 July 1975, his connection with the world of acting began to take shape after he enrolled in 1994 at the Department of Theatre within the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at Bilkent University.
Kılıç began his professional career at the Ankara Art Theatre and later worked at the Diyarbakır State Theatre, taking part in various theatrical roles as an actor, teacher and director. He completed a master’s degree in directing at the Ankara State Conservatoire of Hacettepe University and then taught at the Theatre Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Atatürk University. He later continued his career in Istanbul, where he performed on various stages.
His involvement with television and Turkish series began in 2000 with the series Bizim Evin Halleri (“The Affairs of Our House”), in which he played Karl Gurur. In the years that followed, he appeared in numerous Turkish productions, including Hatırla Sevgili (“Remember, My Love”), as Kamil Gündüz; Ezel, as Selim Uğurlu; Seksenler (“The Eighties”), as Ergun Plak; Söz (“The Promise”), as Çolak; Kuruluş Osman (“The Founder: Osman”), as Mihail Kosses; Maraşlı, as Necati Türel; and Kirli Sepeti (“The Laundry Basket”), as Feyyaz Ağırtaş.
A film by the actor who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes
One of the characters that made him most recognisable to the general public was precisely that of Ergun Plak, whom he played in the popular series Seksenler, set in the 1980s. However, his career was not limited to television.
In cinema, he appeared in films such as Nokta (“The Point”), in which he played Selim; Veda (“The Farewell”), as Salih Bozok; Kış Uykusu (“Winter Sleep”), as Imam Hamdi; Mavzer, as Veysi; and Cenazemize Hoş Geldiniz (“Welcome to Our Funeral”), as Necati.
Kış Uykusu (Winter Sleep), directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan and in which the Turkish actor also appeared, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. Serhat Kılıç continued to work on stage until the final years of his life.
