Kanye West draws 118,000 fans in Istanbul for historic concert

American rapper and producer Kanye West, also known as Ye and a Grammy Award winner, made his debut on Saturday, May 30, in Istanbul with a concert described as “historic” that drew a crowd of nearly 118,000: a lavish, massive event that the artist claims was the concert in a stadium with the highest attendance in history.

Considered one of the biggest musical events of the year, the show took place at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, located in the European district of Başakşehir and considered the stadium with the largest capacity in all of Turkey. Thousands of people traveled to the Turkish metropolis not only from Türkiye but also from numerous countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Poland, as well as from several countries of the Middle East.

The magnitude of the event was evident several hours before it began, when the venue filled with fans of the American artist and access roads to the area experienced significant traffic congestion. The massive concert generated enormous anticipation, and the stadium was already full several hours before the event began: fans began entering the venue as soon as the gates opened at 4:00 p.m., while the performance kicked off at 9 p.m., reported the Turkish news agency DHA.

For nearly two hours, Kanye West performed his songs on a stage set inspired by a globe, accompanied by visual displays and lighting effects that complemented his music, astonishing everyone in attendance. West opened the night with “Father” and closed his set with “Stronger”; he performed nonstop on the globe-shaped stage throughout the two-hour concert, during which — amid the cheers and applause of the audience — he performed some of the most popular songs of his career, including “King,” “Runaway,” “Power,” “Flashing Lights,” “Heartless,” “Black Skinhead,” “All The Love,” and “Homecoming”.

Among those attending Kanye West’s concert in Istanbul were also many celebrities and well-known figures from Turkey; including the actors Şükrü Özyıldız, Alina Boz, Umut Evirgen, Nilperi Şahinkaya, Ayşe Tolga, Hazar Ergüçlü, Yasemin Allen, Afra Saraçoğlu, and Aslı Tandoğan, as well as the singers Elif Buse Doğan and Burak Kut. The event was also streamed live via the artist’s official YouTube channel, reaching millions of online viewers in a matter of minutes.
