One dead and 7 injured after bus overturned in Istanbul

One person was killed and seven others were injured in an accident in the Maltepe district on the Asian side of Istanbul after a bus overturned this morning on the D-100 highway.

Turkish media reported that the accident occurred at around 11:00 local time when the driver of the vehicle, a minibus travelling in the direction of Ankara, lost control causing the bus to overturn on the asphalt, apparently due to the slippery state of the road because of the rain.

Several emergency services immediately arrived at the scene of the accident and had to cut off one of the lanes on which the overturned vehicle was lying. According to Turkish press reports, the driver of the minibus was killed in the accident, while seven members of the same family of Afghan origin who were passengers, including four children, were injured and were taken to hospital after receiving initial treatment at the scene.

The body of the bus driver, identified as Şenol Vatansever, was taken to the morgue of the Istanbul Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy. Police have launched an investigation into the causes of the accident.
