Three women were killed and two others seriously injured in a horrific traffic accident when the car they were travelling in fell off a bridge from a height of 6 metres in the city of Izmir, on Turkey’s west coast.
According to media reports in Turkey, the vehicle fell from a height of approximately 6 metres after speeding off a street in the central Konak district, landing face up on the asphalt. A large number of emergency services were quickly on the scene and confirmed the death of three of the women in the vehicle: Sadiye Bulut (72), Samire Kaya (48) and Gülistan Fidan (48). All three were seated in the back of the car. Later, the emergency services had to prevent the victims’ relatives who came to the scene from approaching the car.
The driver – who could not yet be identified – and her companion, Fatma Öner (35), were rescued alive from inside the wrecked car and were taken to hospital in a serious condition. Turkish press reports that the women were returning from a hospital after visiting a relative who had undergone an operation. It is also reported that the three fatalities in the back of the car were not wearing seat belts.
A witness to the terrible accident, Celal Yılmaz, said that he was taking a walk when he saw a car coming down the street honking its horn, until it hit the barrier and fell through the overpass. Kubilay Beceren, a motorcyclist who was driving on the road where the car fell into, said that the car fell down just after he passed by on his motorbike, and that they managed to get the two injured women out of the car but were unable to access the back of the vehicle.
