Turkey‘s communications director, Burhanettin Duran, said on Wednesday that Israel‘s attacks on Gaza and its parliament’s decision to approve the annexation of the occupied West Bank show that the Israeli government has no real peace agenda, but intends to continue the occupation and genocide.
“This latest attack has once again shown that Israel is a threat to regional peace and stability. The international community must show its determination to condemn Israel’s genocidal policies,” Duran said in a statement on the Turkish social network NSosyal, quoted by the Turkish news agency Anatolia.
Turkish foreign ministry also condemned the latest Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, calling it “a flagrant violation” of the ceasefire reached earlier this month. In a statement, Ankara expressed deep concern over reports of dozens of civilian casualties, and reiterated its call for full respect for the truce “for preserving the prospect for lasting peace and ensuring regional security”. “We reiterate our call on Israel to adhere to the ceasefire and to refrain from actions that undermine peace and stability”, the ministry said.
More than 100 Palestinians killed in latest attacks
The Israeli military launched a series of air and artillery strikes on Gaza on Tuesday after receiving orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to immediately execute a “forceful” offensive against the Palestinian enclave, saying Hamas had violated the truce. The shelling, according to Gazan medical sources, killed more than 100 Palestinians, including 46 children and numerous women.
Despite this action, the Israeli army itself announced on 29 October that the ceasefire in Gaza, in force since 10 October, was back in force, although it warned that it would respond firmly to “any violation” of the truce.
In response, Hamas said it would delay handing over the body of another Israeli hostage. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, on an official visit to Asia, defended Israel’s attacks, saying they were “justified” because – in his words – Hamas killed an Israeli soldier during an exchange of fire at Rafah, in southern Gaza. The Islamist movement denied any involvement in the incident, however, and accused Israel of breaking the ceasefire agreement.
