Istanbul airport authorities announced in the last few hours modifications to scheduled flights due to the adverse weather conditions expected in the city, where after the heavy rain and wind storm of the last few days, precipitation in the form of snow is now expected from this Sunday night, which will cause problems and complications in transport, including at airports.
In a statement released on social media, the Sabiha Gökçen International Airport Authority (HEAŞ) said that, following the latest reports provided by the General Directorate of Meteorology, adverse weather phenomena are expected throughout Istanbul, for which it has been forced to reduce its flights by at least 10% for Monday.
“Due to the expected adverse weather conditions, flight operations at Sabiha Gökçen International Airport will be reduced by 10% throughout the day. Passengers are strongly advised to follow the latest information about their flights through the official websites and call centres of the airlines concerned,” HEAŞ alerted in a statement quoted by Turkish news channel NTV.

Turkey’s General Directorate of Meteorology and the Istanbul Disaster Coordination Centre (AKOM) have issued a yellow alert for 51 provinces in the country, including Istanbul, and in some Turkish provinces classes have been suspended for tomorrow due to forecast snowfall: complications that come just days after a severe storm in Istanbul with winds of up to 100 km/h caused havoc in the city and serious complications for planes trying to land at Istanbul’s Asian airport.
Meteorologists predict that the rainfall, which began today as heavy showers in Istanbul, will turn to snow as night falls and temperatures drop. The forecast is for sleet and snow in several areas of Istanbul tomorrow, as well as in other parts of the country, due to a cold snap from Russia and the Balkans that will keep temperatures very low on Monday and Tuesday, with night-time lows below freezing. So far, no flight cancellations have been reported at Istanbul Airport.
