Chinese brands BYD and Chery to produce electric cars in Turkey

The Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, confirmed this Friday that Turkey is in very advanced negotiations with the Chinese electric car manufacturers brands BYD and Chery Automobile to invest in the construction of several production plants in the Eurasian country.

“We would like to complete the negotiations as soon as possible. We have come a long way with both,” said the minister during an interview in which he also stated that Turkey also maintains negotiations with other Chinese vehicle manufacturers such as SAIC Motor (owner of the MG brand) or Great Wall Motor.

“There is significant interest on the part of international brands to produce electric cars in Türkiye. The fact that Turkey belongs to the EU customs union is a great advantage for many global brands,” Kacır highlighted.

Last December, the Turkish minister already visited numerous cities in China and held negotiations with several companies dedicated to the manufacturing of automobiles and batteries for electric cars, including GAC AION, Chery, Zeekr, BYD, SAIC, Huawei or Farasis Energy; the latter already has plans to build a production plant for batteries in the Turkish city of Gemlik in collaboration with TOGG, the manufacturer of the first Turkish electric car.
