Turkey has mobilised all its diplomacy to try to stop the war in Gaza, which threatens to unleash simmering tensions with unpredictable consequences across the Middle East region. Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by telephone on Monday with Indonesian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati; Erdoğan said yesterday that he would use all his efforts to achieve a ceasefire that would lead to a stable and lasting peace in the region, but reiterated that the only “just” way to achieve this goal is the two-state solution.
Also on Monday, Turkey’s chief diplomat, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, spoke by phone with British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, a day after he spoke with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who praised Turkey’s efforts. Fidan also discussed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in Gaza with the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates (Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan), Jordan (Ayman Safadi), Spain (José Manuel Albares), Palestine (Riad Malki), and other key countries in the region such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran.
