Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan announced yesterday during the TEKNOFEST festival, dedicated to technology, aeronautics and space engineering, the first Turkish astronaut to travel into space: Alper Gezer Avcı (Mersin, 1979), an experienced Turkish Air Force pilot, who will travel to the International Space Station (ISS); his backup astronaut (his replacement in case Gezeravcı couldn’t fly) will be Tuna Cihangir Atasever (Ankara, 1992), a space propulsion engineer working for the Turkish defense giant Roketsan. Gezeravcı is scheduled to travel to space in the last quarter of 2023, where he will spend 14 days on the ISS conducting a total of 13 experiments prepared by Turkish researchers.
