On January 1, 2017, a Daesh terrorist entered this Istanbul club shooting during a New Year’s party, killing 39 people and wounding 79.
A Turkish court sentenced on September 7 to 40 life sentences without the possibility of parole, in addition to more than 1,300 years in prison, to the Daesh militant responsible for the brutal attack on New Year’s Day 2017 at the famous Club Reina in Istanbul, where 39 people were killed when an armed individual entered shooting during a New Year’s Eve party.
The Serious Crimes Court No. 27 of Istanbul yesterday sentenced the individual of Uzbek nationality Abdulkadir Masharipov as the material author of the attack to several life sentences, finding him guilty of the charges of murdering 39 people – including a police officer – and of attempting against the Constitution of Turkey. In addition, Masharipov received 1,368 years of sentence for the attempted murder of 79 other people and for violating the firearms law.
Another of the defendants, Ilyas Mamasaripov, who was facing charges for having collaborated in the planning of the attack and having assisted the perpetrator of the murders, was sentenced by the same court to 1,432 years in prison after the court found him guilty of the charges of collaboration in murder and attempted murder, among others.
In the early morning of January 1, 2017, Abdulkadir Masharipov entered a party that was being held at the exclusive Reina Club, located in the Ortaköy neighbourhood of Istanbul, and began firing indiscriminately at all the attendees, killing 39 people – including 27 foreigners – and wounding 79 others. After 17 days of searching, the police detained him in a house in the Esenyurt neighbourhood. The club was demolished a few months later.
