Car crashes and overturns in Istanbul: the accident was caught on camera

A driver driving down a steeply sloping road in Kağıthane, a district in the north of Istanbul, lost control of his vehicle, causing it to careen down the road at high speed, hitting first two cars and then a natural gas installation before overturning. The driver, who was nearly killed and was injured in the accident, was taken to hospital by ambulance, while the moment of the accident was recorded by a security camera in a nearby building.

The accident, as reported by the Turkish news agency DHA, took place yesterday at around 9:00 a.m. on Tarçın Street, located in the Hürriyet neighbourhood. The driver, Mehmet Oymalı, who was driving down the street, lost control for reasons still under investigation and hit first two parked vehicles and then a natural gas installation, after which the car overturned.

Firefighters, medical staff, police and gas company crews were on the scene; after rescuing the driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle, the firefighters cut off the gas supply. The injured driver was taken by ambulance to hospital.

“The car’s brakes failed while going down the hill. It first hit other vehicles and then the natural gas box. It went through the wall and overturned. Normally children play here. The schools are closed and luckily there were no children here at that time. As the accident happened early in the morning, nobody was there. If it had happened at noon, it would have been a tragedy,” explained Veysel Kandil, a witness to the incident.

Preliminary police investigations confirmed that two vehicles were damaged in the accident, while the road was temporarily closed to traffic, although once the affected cars were removed by crane the road was reopened to traffic. The accident was recorded by a building security camera: the footage shows the vehicle speeding down the sloping road, crashing into several parked cars until it finally overturns and flips over several times.
