Leaders from all over the world have congratulated Erdoğan after his victory in Turkey’s presidential elections, which its 2nd round was held yesterday and in which the current Turkish president beat his opposition rival with 52% of the vote. “Congratulations to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye on his re-election. I look forward to continuing working together as NATO allies,” US President Joe Biden wrote on Twitter. Also from the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated his Turkish counterpart and expressed his willingness to continue the “constructive dialogue” between Moscow and Ankara.
In France, French President Emmanuel Macron conveyed his congratulations to Erdoğan on his victory in Turkey’s elections with a message on Twitter written in Turkish, stressing that both nations have “immense challenges” to work on together, including “the return of peace to Europe”, referring to the war in Ukraine. Likewise, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated the Turkish president through Twitter and expressed her desire to “continue building relations between the EU and Turkey“, which she considered “of strategic importance for both”. Other rulers who immediately congratulated Erdoğan after confirming his victory were the political leaders of Azerbaijan, Qatar, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro or Georgia.
