Efforts to extinguish the forest fire in Muğla, specifically in the Yaraş neighbourhood of the Menteşe district on the Aegean coast of Turkey, are continuing both on the ground and from the air, with hundreds of firefighters and forest fire service personnel battling the flames. Meanwhile, the Muğla-Denizli motorway has been closed to traffic for safety reasons due to the fire.
The wildfire broke out in the early hours of the morning in a wooded area near the village of Yaraş, situated alongside the Muğla-Denizli motorway, according to reports from local media. Forest firefighting teams, as well as firefighters from the metropolitan municipality of Muğla, then began ground-based fire-fighting operations.
A large-scale aerial and ground operation to tackle the flames
At first light, numerous aerial resources were dispatched to the area. 13 helicopters and 7 aeroplanes are currently involved in the fire-fighting efforts, whilst on the ground, 32 fire engines, nine water tankers, seven excavators and 187 firefighters are battling the flames.
Furthermore, it has been reported that the forest fire has also reached the neighbourhood of Armutçuk in the last few hours, located further south in the neighbouring district of Ula.
According to the latest reports, the Muğla-Denizli motorway has been closed to traffic for safety reasons due to the flames and thick smoke, which are affecting the road and making it impossible to drive on. For the time being, only authorised vehicles involved in the forest fire-fighting efforts are permitted to pass.
