The Istanbul City Hall Transport Coordination Center (UKOME) has announced new price increases for taxis and public transport services in the Turkish metropolis, in line with the increase in prices due to inflation. Thus, the basic rate for yellow taxis goes from 12.65 TL (liras) to 19.17 TL, while the cost per km. travelled increases to 12.89 TL. In practice, this means that a passenger who used to pay 40 liras for a short taxi ride, will now pay 70 liras (75% more). Even so, the price increase is lower than that demanded by the taxi drivers‘ associations, which had demanded a 100% increase.
